The 3 Types of Stress Stored in Body — And How to Begin Releasing Them

Not all stress looks the same — but your body remembers all of it.

You might be feeling tension, fatigue, pain, anxiety, overwhelm… or just not quite like yourself. And yet when you try to figure out why, you can’t always find a clear answer.

That’s because stress isn’t just mental.
It lives in your nervous system.
And it often gets stored in the body — physically, chemically, or emotionally — without you even realising.

At Abiding Body Wellness, we support the body in identifying and gently releasing these stress patterns using the Spinal Flow Technique. But first, let’s explore the three types of stress that may be living in your body.

  1. Physical Stress

“My body feels sore, tight, or heavy… and I don’t know why.”

Physical stress happens when the body experiences strain, impact, or injury — either all at once (like a fall or accident) or over time (like poor posture or repetitive movement).

It might come from:

  • Car accidents or falls
  • Sports or workplace injuries
  • Childbirth or surgery
  • Long-term sitting or slouching
  • Repetitive strain (lifting, typing, standing)

When physical stress builds up in the body, it creates tension patterns in the spine and muscles. This often leads to:

  • Tight shoulders, neck or jaw
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Muscle aches, stiffness, or poor posture
  • Fatigue or heaviness in the limbs
  • Difficulty relaxing or “letting go”

Even after the original event has passed, the nervous system remembers — and may stay in a state of high alert until it’s gently supported to release.

  1. Emotional Stress

“I thought I dealt with that… but my body still feels it.”

Emotional stress is stored when we experience overwhelming events — but don’t feel safe enough (or supported enough) to process the emotions at the time.

This might include:

  • Grief, heartbreak, or trauma
  • Childhood stress or family dynamics
  • Suppressing emotions to “stay strong”
  • Ongoing anxiety or fear
  • Feeling unseen, unworthy, or unsupported

Emotional stress doesn’t disappear just because we try to move on. When it gets stored in the body, it can show up as:

  • Feeling anxious, on edge, or emotionally flat
  • A tight chest or shallow breathing
  • Mood swings or emotional reactivity
  • Feeling “stuck,” disconnected, or numb
  • Fatigue with no obvious cause
  • Unexplained aches or tightness

Often people say, “I thought I’d moved on” — and they had, mentally.
But the body holds what the mind can’t process.

  1. Chemical Stress

“I feel foggy, sluggish, or bloated — and I don’t know what’s causing it.”

Chemical stress is often invisible, but it’s everywhere — in our environment, food, products, and even our internal systems. It builds up quietly, until the nervous system can’t cope.

Common sources include:

  • Processed foods, caffeine, alcohol
  • Medications and antibiotics
  • Hormonal birth control or endocrine disruptors
  • Environmental toxins (plastics, perfumes, pollution)
  • Cleaning or skincare products with harsh chemicals
  • The water we drink or shower in (our body absorbs the chemicals in our water)

When chemical stress builds, it may overload your body’s natural ability to detox. The result?

  • Brain fog and low energy
  • Bloating, gut issues, or skin irritation
  • Hormonal imbalance or mood swings
  • Headaches or sensitivity to smells
  • Poor sleep or trouble focusing

You may not realise it, but your nervous system is constantly responding to these subtle stressors.
